Knot magick is one of the simplest kinds of spells you can work with. The supplies are readily accessible–just a piece of natural string and your intentions. You can even use your hair for this work!
(Check out this episode on YouTube!)
This kind of spell is also great if you’re looking to keep your practice on the DL, as the string you use can easily be hidden away where no one but the nosiest of nosey-tons will find it. And even then, it’s a piece of string!
Also, this working takes a minimal amount of time, and can be done on a lunch break, before bed, or whenever you can scratch out 15 minutes. Look, we live in a busy world, and sometimes we just need to get some magick out there! I think witchcraft is best when it’s accessible, both temporally and emotionally, and knot magick fits the bill.
- The first step, as always, is to find your intention. Go deep here, look under your initial response for what lies beneath. Can you get more succinct? Closer to the root of what you really want? Call that in.
- Set up your body and your space. Make sure you’re working in a clean area, and do some kind of cleansing on yourself, as well. Wash your hands with intention, take a ritual bath, smudge your aura–whatever feels right and accessible to you at the time. But make sure you do something, to signal to yourself and the Universe that you are entering a sacred space.
- Open a circle if this is in your practice, and call in whatever helping spirits you work with.
- Ground and center. (Want more info? Check out this episode of the podcast!)
- These next things are optional, but I find them to be really helpful to get me in the right set: light a candle and put on some music that makes you feel witchy and powerful. Check out this playlist for inspiration.
- Now, sit with your intention for a while, tapping into how you will feel once your intention becomes manifest. What emotions will you have? What will your day be like? How will you look? Let this permeate your body. Then bring in a deep sense of gratitude for having your intention come through, and gratitude for every moment before that led you to that point.
- Holding on to these feelings, bring your string out and begin tying knots. You can tie one after another, as many as you like, and even tie herbs, feathers, and stones into the knots as you go. Repeat your intention with each knot. Draw energy up from the earth, through your body, into the work.
- Alternatively, you can tie a specific number of knots. This is a great opportunity to craft your own rhyming spell, or use this one from Doreen Valiente.
- When you’re done with your knots, spend another minute (or as long as you like) feeling the power you’ve brought into the space, and into the cord in your hands.
- When you’re ready, thank your helping spirits and close your circle. If you haven’t opened a circle, simply take a moment to allow any residual, extra energy to flow back into the earth.
There you have it! You can wear tis spell around a wrist or ankle, tuck it into your shoe or wallet, even hang it from your wall.
As you can see, this spell can easily be adapted to whatever your aim is. Let me know how it goes for you!
